Darrell Gartrell is a great storyteller, and 21 Years of Wisdom is a fascinating underdog's tale set in exotic Japan in the midst of an economic boom. The book is totally enjoyable on many levels.The writer, who was born and raised in Compton Los Angeles, is possessed with an entrepreneurial bent from a young age, and decides to try his luck in Japan. Gartrell has a knack for English language instruction as a private tutor and eventually decides to open an English language academy called Wisdom 21. Against the odds, his business thrives and expands. Later in his Japan experience, Gartrell diversifies into the restaurant business. Throughout his stay, the author experiences many interesting personal and romantic relationships with the Japanese. He even has run-ins with the yakuza (Japanese mafia).
The prose - which flows very smoothly - is sprinkled with savvy cultural observations that compare the U.S. to Japan, discuss race and discrimination both in the U.S. and Japan, and speak to the complex role of women in Japan.
21 Years of Wisdom provides many valuable business lessons, among them how to bootstrap a start-up company, recruit staff, perform a multi-unit expansion, manage an economic downturn and handle disgruntled employees. The fact that Gartrell was able to accomplish all of this as an outsider operating in a complex foreign country like Japan is truly impressive.
I highly recommend 21 Years of Wisdom - One Man's Extraordinary Triumph in Osaka, Japan - and look forward to reading the book again and again!

Get ready for an amazing ride! I could not put it down! This book gives so much raw and candid insight into the Japanese culture. As an African American female who enjoys traveling, I wanted an honest perspective of what life was like in Japan and what I could expect if i decided to travel there. The author definitely walks you through the various cultural expectations and doesn't hold back on what it's REALLY like to live in Japan. The honesty of the author's words will grab you and keep you reading. It's literally a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. This is what I call a rock star story of what it feels like to be high up and then suddenly so low you're sinking like the Titanic!

DARRELL GARTRELL’S “21 years of Wisdom” – One man’s Extraordinary Odyssey In Japan – A Memoir is a very exciting page-turner. Darrell opens his story with his experience getting an automobile driver’s license in Japan when the law changed, and the Japanese no longer recognized the international driver’s license. This experience with the Japanese bureaucracy sets the tenor for many related experiences Darrell finds himself in during the trials and tribulations of opening 5 language schools in between learning to navigate the social and business components of the Japanese culture. From teaching himself Japanese to the nuances of hiring an employee and the consequences and responsibilities that flow to that employee sets the mood for his trip through the Japanese life style. Darrell Gartrell essentially became Japanese. Through the hallways of Japanese business and the special and emotional ties with the love of the Japanese woman Darrell Gartrell, a gifted young man from south Los Angeles learns to traverse the subtle nuances of Japanese life and culture.

Interestingly enough the author himself brought this book to my attention a few weeks back, as he had noticed the myriad of other Japan/Travel related books I'd previously read.
The book provides some fascinating insights into the author's life, and in particular focuses on his 20 years in Osaka, during which time he setup a successful branch of English language schools, before it all came crashing down by the end. I understand that story told is rooted in fact with perhaps some embellishment thrown in to make for a better read. I'd be fascinated to know what was what.
I loved the way the book opened up - a chapter about the frustrations of getting a drivers licence in Japan. Although mundane in nature it's expertly written and sets the scene for some of what's to come.
The book then switches to the authors early life in Los Angeles and relates some heartbreaking stories. I found this part especially interesting, and actually would have liked to have read more about this time in his life.
The book is well written and very easy to read. If anything I would have loved it was longer and was able to go into more detail, as the author seemed to have some great insight into how Japanese culture works - things which I haven't come across in other similar type books.
It's a personal story which you can tell has had a lot of love put into it. If you enjoy Japan you'll enjoy this. You'll enjoy it even if you don't. Highly recommended.
